Happy Monday and new week, my friends!
Today is my daddy’s birthday. He would have been 75 years old today. He has been in Heaven for almost 17 years, but it’s strange how the heart does – sometimes it feels like Daddy has been gone forever, and other times it seems as if he was just with us. Thinking about my daddy always makes me smile ~ I guess I was and always will be a “Daddy’s Girl.”
Most of my pictures are where I can’t get to them right now… One of these days I plan to scan all of them… sigh… But I posted a few pics of what I could get my hands on this morning. My sister posted this picture of us on FB several months ago. (I just had this terrible fear run through me – what if we end up on that website of “Awkward Family Photos?” haha! (I’m the one rockin’ the sweater vest and mega-cuffed blouse.) At least we aren’t holding a pet goat as in this pic.
My daddy was a funny man with eyes that sparkled when he laughed. We laughed a lot around our house. Back then, I thought that was normal. But now, I see what a true treasure my brother, sister, and I had in our parents. James is the only “in law” that got to know Daddy, and Nathan is the only grandchild that daddy held in his arms. He died when Nathan was 10 weeks old. I wish he was still here… He would have enjoyed all of his grandchildren so much!
I’m so grateful for my mom and dad… and have so much more I could say or share about each of them, but today, my mom is getting out of the hospital, and I’m heading to get her in a few minutes. I think she’d rather me do that than write more about them. Right, Mom???
The sweetest thing that always makes me smile is the fact that around Father’s Day or Daddy’s birthday… every year for the past 16 years, the Lord has reminded me that I’m not here without a dad. He IS my Father. And as I open His Word to meet with Him, either through something I’m studying at the time, or through the Names of Jesus that I use every day, God points me toward a verse or passage about His Fatherhood over us. It’s so beautiful how He does that! Whatever it is that we need… God meets that need. Just like a Good Daddy. Even better than a great earthly daddy could ever possibly do. Today’s verse was about the discipline and training that our earthly dads give to us, and how we learn to submit and obey them for our good. How much more, then, should we learn to cheerfully submit to the Father of our Spirit as He trains us in righteousness? Always for our good. Always. (That was in Hebrews 12:9)
Whatever it is that we wish our earthly fathers had been like, God is like that. All of the good qualities we desire in a human, God has those, plus more. More than we can ever imagine. Though we sometimes feel His discipline or displeasure, He never stops loving us. And His comfort reaches deeper than any man’s ever could. He is the source of every good thing.
So, a Happy Birthday to my precious earthly daddy, and a Praise to my Heavenly Father. Both bring huge smiles into my life!
And a blessed beginning of the new week to you~
